Founded on April 20, 1964, the Southwestern Oklahoma Historical Society was established to preserve and promote the history of this region. For more than six decades, we have documented pioneer settlement, Native American heritage, ranching culture, military history, and community development. Through research and publication, including our historical journal Prairie Lore, we serve as a trusted resource for Southwest Oklahoma history.

Southwestern Oklahoma’s story stretches from Indigenous cultures who lived on these plains for centuries to the pioneers who established farms, towns, schools, and businesses after statehood. The region reflects resilience, cultural diversity, and frontier determination. We work to preserve and share this layered history for future generations.

The identity of Southwest Oklahoma is rooted in both Native American heritage and pioneer settlement. We are committed to respectfully preserving Indigenous history alongside the records of early settlers, ranchers, educators, and civic leaders. Our mission is to maintain a balanced and documented historical record.

Every town, family, and tribal community carries a story worth preserving. Through historical documents, photographs, oral histories, and regional research, we safeguard the records that help explain who we are and where we came from. Our archives support genealogists, educators, historians, and community members across Southwest Oklahoma.
