Preserving the stories of pioneers, Native peoples, military heritage, and communities that shaped Southwest Oklahoma.

Join the Society

From the Wichita Mountains to the Red River, Southwestern Oklahoma is a region rich in Native American heritage, frontier settlement, cattle trails, military history, and community resilience.

The purpose for which the Southwestern Oklahoma Historical Society was organized on April 20, 1964, was to preserve and promote the history of the pioneers and Indians of Southwest Oklahoma.

Through research, archives, publications, and public programs, we ensure that the voices of the past remain accessible to future generations.

About the Southwestern Oklahoma Historical Society

Our Mission and Legacy Since 1964

Founded on April 20, 1964, the Southwestern Oklahoma Historical Society was established to preserve and promote the history of this region. For more than six decades, we have documented pioneer settlement, Native American heritage, ranching culture, military history, and community development. Through research and publication, including our historical journal Prairie Lore, we serve as a trusted resource for Southwest Oklahoma history.

The region reflects resilience, cultural diversity, and frontier determination. We work to preserve and share this layered history for future generations.
